Singing English

I forgot how up-and-down English was.

I do remember having to concentrate on speaking without a lot of inflection when learning Japanese, but even after 6 months of living here I didn't realize how much flatter French was...until today when my teacher was having me repeat lines from a video so the kids could really hear the inflection.  So picture me, repeating "HAVE you got a soFA?" over and over, while making a wave motion with my hand to try to send home the point that you need to stress certain syllables.  I didn't get any cool points for that little display, but I did get a gigantic kick out of hearing the students try to parrot it back to me.  (I also got a kick out of the fact that they will most likely never, ever utter this sentence in any sort of useful context, but that really wasn't the point of the exercise.)

Maybe my next lesson should be iambic pentameter?

Word.

But, for my own part, it was Greek to me.
(William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar; Act I, Scene II)
