Better than snow days!

I only had to go to school 3 days last week, because of the grève.  Apparently it's not just the transportation workers going on strike (although only one of my schools is participating...I think it just depends).  There's also a rumor that there may be fuel shortages because of the strike.  Based on my understanding, this grève has to do with the retirement age being changed from 60 to 62.  (This has actually already been passed into law, the grève when I arrived was over this issue as well - people are not happy about it.)  There is also a proposal to raise the pension age. I don't believe that has been passed into law at this time.

Found this awesome picture online.  Stick it to the man!
This is a new experience for me, as strikes in America are so rare. I guess we do have protests sometimes, but we don't have revolution in our veins the way the French do.  (Which is odd, because historically speaking, the French Revolution and our own weren't very far apart at all.)  Anyway, it's interesting.  The right to strike is even in their constitution.  I have no idea how long this strike will go on.  It lasted for several days last week, and I think there might be another one next week.  I guess we'll see how it all ends up...

  1. lol C'est la France!! I read about the strict in a Spanish newspaper and I'm not sure what side I'm on. I mean I know money must be saved but it sucks for the workers. Either way, better that in the States!

Hey I'm applying to the same program too!
