ONE MONTH!!!

Although technically my flight leaves September 21st, which is a month from yesterday, I actually will get to Angoulême a month from today (yay for overnight flights?)

It seems like just yesterday that I got my arrêté in the mail and was able to get excited about Angoulême.  I was so excited and busy that I forgot to write about my new town!

Angoulême, highlighted in red.

According to wikipedia.fr, Angoulême is a town of about 43,000.  It's surrounded by ramparts and is the comic book capital of France, which is 100% awesome.

The fact that I'm excited to be in a comic book town is a surprise to nobody, apparantly.
Me: "How did they know?  How did the officials know that I was nerdy, and I'd love to live in a place like this?"
Lauren: "Well, you sent a picture, right?"
Me: "......"

It seems like the whole town is into it, though.  They have "murs peints" all around the town, apparantly.  Here's a sample:

I really feel like it's all starting to come together.  I got my plane ticket, successfully navigated San Francisco (despite initially getting on the bus going in the wrong direction and arriving at the consulate with a scant 2 minutes to spare, but that's neither here nor there), and found a place to live.  It's all starting to seem real...I just need that Visa to come in the mail!

A bientôt, Angoulême!  Until then, more photos poached from Wikipedia:

  3. Dear DreadPirateMegan,

I stumbled across your blog while searching for some information (any information!) about the TAPIF program. I, too, was accepted and will be teaching in primaire schools for 7 months in Nevers (near Dijon), so I'm sharing your excitement! I leave for France tomorrow; if you need a fellow American to travel with, I'd love to meet up! My plan is to travel to as many small villages in France as possible, and Angoulême sounds as fun a place as any...plus, the comic book murals just look awesome :) Hope to hear back from you, and enjoy your time in France!
